What is Value-Added Analysis?

Discover the Power of Measuring Student Progress & Achievement
What is Value-Added Analysis?
Value-added analysis is a statistical method that helps educators measure the impact schools make on students’ rates of academic progress from year to year.

Why is Measuring Progress & Achievement Important?
Achievement measures students’ growth at a single point in time and how they perform against a standard. Progress measures the amount of growth a student or groups of students make from year to year. Without measuring progress, a child could score beyond state and federal expectations, but be declining in academic growth over time.

How Does Value-Added Analysis Improve Teaching and Learning?
Value-added analysis provides important diagnostic information not previously available with traditional achievement reporting. With value-added information…

Teachers are better able to:
•    Monitor students’ progress ensuring growth opportunities for ALL students
•    Predict students’ future academic performance
•    Modify instruction to address all students’ needs
•    Align professional development efforts in the areas of greatest need

District and building administrators are better able to:
•    Measure the impact of educational practices, classroom curricula, instructional methods and
     professional development
•    Make informed, data-driven decisions about where to focus resources to help students make greater
progress and perform at higher levels
•    Benchmark progress against other districts and schools
•    Identify best practices and implement more effective programs for students

When used with other data sources, value-added information provides one of the most insightful indications of a school’s impact on student learning across grades and subject levels.
